Business Professional Development Program student expectations

The following expectations exist to maintain long-standing positive relationships between the School of Business and hiring organizations. Failure to comply with the guidelines outlined in these frequently asked questions may result in damaged recruiting relationships at KU.

Expectations for the job search, hiring process

Students are expected to RSVP to invitations for networking events and interviews within the provided time frame. They should also attend all confirmed interviews and recruitment activities (unless they inform recruiters in advance due to illness or adversity). Employers retain the authority to cancel interview invitations if students fail to meet deadlines.

Students who do not sign up for an invited interview, do not appear for a scheduled interview, and/or cancel an interview with less than 24 hours notice will have their HireJayhawks access blocked, and interviewing privileges will be suspended until a letter of explanation is written. These offenses are taken seriously and will be kept on record.

Legitimate conflicts can and will occur. Reasonable conflicts include acceptance of another job offer, personal illness, subsequent interviews/office visits with other recruiting organizations or death in the family. Students may withdraw their candidacy for a position at any time and for any reason, though doing so must be professionally communicated to both the hiring organization and Business Professional Development Services in a timely manner.

If you will not be signing up for an on-campus interview for which you applied and have been invited, or need to cancel a scheduled interview, contact Business Professional Development Services at kubuscareer@ku.edu for guidance in communicating your situation to the employer. Failure to comply will result in disruption to your HireJayhawks account.

Students who are studying abroad should contact Business Professional Development Services directly with an expression of interest in the position promoted on HireJayhawks.

Business Professional Development Services can refer along a resume to the recruiting group outside of the system. The student should not apply to On-Campus Recruiting postings through the system as a courtesy to other applicants, the employer and Business Professional Development Services.

Falsifying data, such as your GPA, dates of graduation, major/minor, work experience, eligibility to work in the United States or other information is unethical and in violation of Business Professional Development Services policies.

If you falsify documents or misrepresent yourself to any employer, via HireJayhawks or in your independent job search, Business Professional Development Services has the right to rescind your privileges to use Business Professional Development Services. Employers have the right to withdraw an offer or terminate your employment for misrepresentation.

Upon agreeing to a job opportunity, whether through the Business Professional Development Services recruitment program or your independent job quest, it is expected that you will fully discontinue any further job-search efforts.

If you find yourself unsure about committing to an offer, please arrange a meeting to seek guidance from a Business Professional Development advisor. Going back on your commitment is unprofessional and can damage both KU's standing within the employment community and your personal reputation. Should you retract your commitment to an offer, Business Professional Development Services reserves the right to restrict your participation in future on-campus interviews.

Students should avoid withdrawing from a commitment except for in cases of substantial adversity. In such situations, the student must notify Business Professional Development Services before informing the employer.

The Business Professional Development Services team provides support to recent graduates and alumni of the KU School of Business. As a recent graduate, the office offers a full extension of comprehensive professional support services.

For other alumni, the office provide two complimentary one-on-one appointments. For needs that extend beyond two appointments, fees may be assessed.

Accountability policy

Students should review the below information before registering for a professional development point-eligible event or activity involving an external party.

By registering for a point-eligible event involving an external party, you acknowledge the commitment of time and resources others have made to ensure your ability to participate, as well as your responsibility in maintaining the reputation of the KU School of Business.

While we understand that life can present unforeseen emergencies, no-showing the day of the event — or canceling less than 24 hours out — without extenuating circumstances will result in a hold on your Suitable account. You will earn no points until you have provided a formal letter of explanation. Repeat offenses will result in an extended hold on your Suitable account up to a semester in length and ineligibility for scholarships.

Points exceptions

Students who transfer into the School of Business during their junior year or after should review the below guidelines.

Students who transferred into School of Business from another university or from another KU major (not pre-business)

Students who transfer into the School of Business during their junior year or after from an external institution or another major (defined as having 60+ transfer credit hours) are only required to earn 100 points, rather than the full 200 (though they must still complete the course requirements and required internship).

If this applies to you, look for the Junior/Senior Transfer Waiver activity in Suitable to automatically be awarded 100 points. This will mean that you only have to earn 100 more to meet the requirement for BUS 410 and graduation.

Submissions for the Junior/Senior Transfer Waiver activity will be checked against advising records, and you may be contacted for further verification.

Students admitted into School of Business sophomore year or later

This waiver does not apply to KU students who were admitted into the School of Business later because of an outstanding prerequisite, a low GPA, or being pre-business — only to those who directly come from another major or institution.

If this describes your situation, you must complete 200 points by the end of your junior year in order to enroll in BUS 410.

Joining HireJayhawks

By using HireJayhawks, students verify that they have read and agree to the outlined recruiting policies shared in the answers to the FAQ below.

There are possible security issues inherent in putting a resume, which may contain such information as address and phone number, on the Internet. Business Professional Development Services takes certain precautionary measures to limit access to student resumes. However, Business Professional Development Services assumes no liability for problems arising from using this system.

The office also makes no warrant or guarantee of the confidentiality of any material posted through its resume posting service. By submitting their resumes, users understand and agree that their resumes and any or all material contained therein may be viewed by anyone with access to the Internet. Business Professional Development Services does not warrant or guarantee that a resume shall be viewed by any specific number of users, or that it will be viewed by any specific user.

Furthermore, Business Professional Development Services does not warrant or guarantee the accuracy of any material posted by users through the Resume Referral Service. User acknowledges and agrees that they are solely responsible for the form and content of any resume or material contained therein placed by the user on the Resume Referral Service.

Business Professional Development Services screens each job opening the office receives and posts. Postings are reviewed for any suspicious information, such as requests for personal bank information or an investment of money, or questionable email or web addresses.

If job duties are unclear or there are multiple misspellings, the office often conducts further research before deciding whether to post a position. However, it is still possible that a well-disguised employment scam might not be detected, and the university does not guarantee job postings or endorse any posted position or employer.

If students encounter a questionable job posting or employer, they should contact Cheryl Webb at cwebb@ku.edu to report the issue.
