KU School of Business launches accounting certificate focused on strategic decision-making
Beginning this fall, students earning a Bachelor of Science in Business at the KU School of Business can pursue a new certificate in accounting with a focus on strategic decision-making.
Through the certificate courses, students will develop skills in financial analysis, managerial decision-making, board governance and performance management. They will also gain expertise in using financial and nonfinancial data to support organizational strategy.
“This certificate empowers KU Business students to strengthen their degree with accounting expertise that enhances decision-making, strategy, and performance management,” said Kelvie Crabb, lecturer and area industry mentor in the school’s Accounting academic area. “It’s especially valuable for students who want to add an accounting skill set without committing to a full major, offering both flexibility and impact.”
The certificate includes four courses, covering topics such as managerial accounting, financial analysis and analytics, and decision-making for the boardroom. Students who complete the certificate will be prepared for careers in accounting, consulting, internal audit, corporate finance or board advisory roles.
According to the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), management accounting is evolving beyond its traditional reporting and controls function. Professionals are now expected to make data-backed strategic decisions, effectively work with financial and nonfinancial data and operate within multifaceted teams. In response to these industry trends, the new certificate offers a foundation for students preparing to take the Certified Management Accounting (CMA), incorporating key concepts tested on the exam throughout the curriculum.
“As the accounting profession evolves beyond traditional reporting, this certificate equips students with the practical, analytical and strategic skills employers demand,” Crabb said. “By aligning with the CMA exam and emphasizing communication and decision-making, the program ensures graduates are ready to contribute in dynamic, cross-functional environments.”
Students may sit for the exam while still in school and must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college and two years of relevant work experience. Data from the IMA’s 2023 Salary Survey shows that 71 percent of those with CMA certification could effectively move between business areas and 69 percent said they had better career trajectory and development
