Learning opportunities

Many of our students intern locally or nationally before or during their MAcc program, thanks to our strong recruiting connections.

"This past summer I was selected to participate EY's Global Student Experience Internship in Melbourne, Australia. Through this program I was able to gain so many valuable experiences both inside and outside the office. Traveling to a different country helped me to realize my interest in working internationally and gave me the confidence to seek out those assignments. I was able to expand my global mindset and grow as an individual. One of my favorite memories from this summer was going scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef with some of the other intern's from my office. This is just one of the many amazing opportunities I have been lucky enough to participate in through accounting."

—Sydney Porter, MAcc student

KU MAcc students contribute to the program as research, graduate and teaching assistants. These roles provide students opportunities to connect with faculty and fellow students as well as develop leadership and professional skills.

"Without a doubt, being a T.A. is the single most influential thing I’ve taken part in during my time in the MAcc program. Not only am I taking part in teaching the course that influenced my decision to become an accounting major, but I am also helping students who are in the same position that I was in four years ago. There is truly no better affirmation of the work I do as a TA than the emails I get at the end of the semester thanking me for helping them navigate through a course that they never thought they would really enjoy."

Study abroad

Students participating in this program learn about Costa Rican and Latin American business and culture by observing it in practice.

Company visits

Students participate in company tours and meetings with management to learn about the unique opportunities and challenges faced by companies operating in Latin America. Companies visited include both manufacturing and services firms and reflect a variety of ownership structures.

University lectures

Lectures from faculty at the University of Costa Rica and local business leaders provide specific information on the local business environment and provide a cultural, historical and institutional context for the study abroad experience.

Cultural/social experiences

Students participate in cultural/social activities to foster a better understanding of the people in Latin America, their history, customs, traditions, behaviors and beliefs.

“Although our time in Costa Rica was less than two weeks, I learned more through this experience than several traditional classes combined. I came to have a better understanding of the business practices, language and values in Latin America. This program recharged me after a tough fall semester and gave me a new appreciation for other cultures, as well as my own. I returned with new recipes, new friends, and memories to last a lifetime.”

—Morgan Little, MAcc student

South Africa is a complex and complicated country. This program provides students an opportunity to learn about South Africa through an economic, business, cultural, social, legal, political and historical lens.

Company visits

Students participate in company tours and meetings with management to better understand the business challenges and opportunities in South Africa. Students visit multinational and South African entities.

University lectures

Lectures from Nelson Mandela University faculty in Port Elizabeth provide students with a deeper context for understanding some of the issues they will learn about during their study abroad experience.

Cultural/social experiences

South Africa is a diverse country with a turbulent history. Students participate in cultural/social activities to foster an understanding of the people of South Africa, their history, customs, traditions, behaviors and beliefs.

Understanding the views of the major ethnic groups is essential to understanding South Africa. Students interact with faculty, students and staff from different ethnic groups throughout the program.

"This trip was quite beneficial to my professional development, given I have studied abroad and interned abroad in two different countries. Learning from companies can be important, but experiencing a culture and country through excursion opportunities allowed me to see the true nature of a country as it relates to business practices. South Africa is filled with much diversity, which allowed me to expand my intercultural communication skills. I highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to increase their comfort zone beyond the United States and have life changing experiences with your peers."
