Industry partners create scholarship opportunities for Jack Lockton Certificate in Insurance and Risk Management program

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Business has established four new scholarships through its industry partners of the Jack Lockton Certificate in Insurance and Risk Management program. Aetna, Chubb and Security Benefit Life, on behalf of the Kansas Insurance & Financial Services Education Foundation, will each contribute $50,000 over a five-year period to support the certificate program and provide scholarship opportunities for seniors enrolled in the program.

The scholarships — the Aetna Insurance and Risk Management Scholarship, the Chubb Insure the Future Scholarship, the Kansas Insurance & Financial Services Education Foundation Scholarship and the Security Benefit Scholarship — will award $2,500 annually to four seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.25.

“We are thankful to our industry partners for their unwavering commitment to the program,” said Kurt Krogull, program director. “These scholarships will serve to further advance our mission to raise awareness among students of the opportunities that await in the insurance industry and to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to launch their careers.”

The certificate launched in fall 2019 with an establishing gift from Cheryl Lockton Williams in memory of her late husband, Jack Lockton, who founded the Kansas City, Missouri-based Lockton Companies. The certificate helps students gain the knowledge and skills needed for careers in insurance and risk management. More than 60 students have earned the certificate since the program’s inception, with nearly 120 students currently enrolled in the program.

Open to undergraduate business majors, the certificate combines 12 credit hours of required and elective coursework, which provides students the necessary tools for future careers in underwriting, claims, agency and brokerage, risk management and more.

Students also gain firsthand exposure to Lockton Companies, Aetna, Chubb, Security Benefit Life and other industry partners through a variety of networking opportunities both in and outside the classroom.
