Business Experiential Learning Requirement
What is the experiential learning requirement?
This requirement provides undergraduate KU Business students with the opportunity to gain real-world experience before graduation, connecting what they've learned in the classroom to the workplace. Experiential learning encompasses, but is not limited to:
- Internships or micro-internships
- Undergraduate research
- Military experience
- Significant business-related responsibilities that extend beyond regular job duties
Completing this requirement earns students the Experiential Learning (SOAR) badge in Suitable as part of the Business Professional Development Program, which is required in order to enroll in the MGMT 498 capstone course.
How to meet the requirement
- Find and secure an experiential opportunity.
- Submit it for pre-approval in Handshake before starting.
- Track your hours using this document (PDF) while actively participating: You'll need to complete at least 120 hours over a minimum of 6 weeks. This can be done through one or more approved experiences.
- Complete required reflections in the Suitable app (within the Experiential Learning/SOAR badge).
Review the following criteria to ensure your experience is eligible for the Business Professional Development Program requirement.
What makes an experience eligible?
- Your experience should hold significant, professional, business-related responsibilities, similar to those a full-time college graduate would have in the organization.
- You must add value to the organization and be challenged with a major project, series of smaller projects or regular responsibilities that require advanced education and knowledge.
- You should have regular interaction with coworkers, supervisors or clients.
- You should have a dedicated, experienced supervisor who can provide feedback and evaluate your performance.
- The experience follows Department of Labor standards.
Other considerations
- Your supervisor should not be a family member.
- If you're working for your own business, you must connect regularly with a mentor to foster growth in business development and other entrepreneurial skills.
- Internships involving direct-to-consumer sales must also include higher marketing strategy or greater business management component.
- You should not be required to utilize personal contacts as sales leads
- Your internship should consist of skilled tasks; the majority of your time should not be spent filing, copying, answering the phone, or performing manual labor or data entry.
- Opportunities with a previous or current employer must be related to your career goals and extend beyond work previously completed for the organization.
- Unpaid opportunities with a for-profit organization and door-to-door sales opportunities are not eligible experiences.
