Business School Experience

Program Description

The purpose of Business School Experience program is to connect students to life at KU and opportunities within the School of Business. Students will learn about academic success and personal success while transitioning to college, leadership development and opportunities, problem-solving, decision-making, and business professionalism. In addition, students will create immediate and lasting connections with School of Business staff, advisors and peers. Experiential learning activities outside of the classroom will be integrated into the course.

The required courses associated with this program are taught by academic and career advisors in the business school as well as current business juniors and seniors. Each section will be led by a team that includes one advisor and one peer mentor. The peer mentor role provides new incoming freshman students with support as they transition from high school to college. Students participating in the Business School Experience program for the 2014-15 academic year show a 91.2% return rate to the second year at the University of Kansas.

Program Objectives

  • Discover the School of Business, the University of Kansas and the Lawrence community
  • Assist students in identifying their academic vision and aid them in successfully achieving their goals
  • Inform, educate and disseminate information about business programs
  • Encourage self-reliance
  • Promote integrity and equal opportunities for students to learn in an ever-changing global environment
  • Encourage students to reach their full potential as a responsible and driven business professional

Students admitted to the business school as freshman are required to take BUS 110 (1) in the fall semester and BUS 120 (1) in the spring semester.

Fall semester — BUS 110 – 1 credit hour

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Articulate the expectations of the first-year Business School Experience program and the School of Business
  • Articulate academic, co-curricular and/or personal goals for your first semester at the University of Kansas
  • Identify your academic advisor
  • Identify at least three university resources that promote student academic and /or personal success
  • Apply at least two time-management strategies, study-skill techniques, test-taking strategies and/or stress management techniques
  • Apply at least one strategy for improving emotional, physical and financial wellness
  • Identify your individual strengths
  • Access degree requirements of the Bachelor of Science in business program

Spring semester — BUS 120 – 1 credit hour

Course Learning Objectives are currently under review and will be updated as soon as possible.

Fall semester – BUS 210, Business Career Fundamentals – 1 credit hour

In this semester-long course, students will have the opportunity to connect with a career advisor and work together to build upon career-related knowledge and skills. Students will have the opportunity to choose focused learning events that meet their specific career goals and needs, as well as improve upon their professional resume and participate in a mock interview.

Course Learning Objectives:

  • Thoughtfully engage in the career decision-making and planning processes
  • Expand knowledge about internal and external opportunities available to business students
  • Enhance interviewing skills
  • Develop a professional resume
  • Develop awareness of the Business Career Services Center and establish a relationship with a career advisor
