Business Honors requirements, policies and procedures

To graduate with a Business Honors designation, students in the Jack Dicus Business Honors Program must complete both academic and experiential learning requirements.

Academic requirements and GPA policy

Business Honors students must:

  • Complete at least 12 credit hours of Business Honors coursework
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative KU GPA of 3.5

BHP maintains high academic standards while supporting students in getting back on track if needed.

  • Students will be placed on academic probation for the following semester.
  • A meeting with the program director is required.
  • Students must raise their KU GPA to 3.5 or above during the probationary semester.
    • If the GPA is not restored to 3.5, the student will be removed from the program.

Students will be removed from the Business Honors Program.

After removal from the program

  • Students are not eligible to enroll in KU School of Business Honors courses.
  • Students may petition for re-entry once their KU GPA returns to 3.5 or higher.
  • Petitions should be submitted to the Associate Dean for Student Success.

Note: Students who remain part of the University Honors Program may still be eligible to enroll in KU Business Honors courses.

BHP experiential learning requirement

Business Honors students are expected to extend their learning beyond the classroom. To meet this requirement, students must complete three experiential learning activities during their time in the program.

Students meet regularly with a KU Business faculty or staff member to plan, reflect on and connect these experiences to their academic and professional goals.

These activities should reflect engagement in one or more of the following areas:

Demonstrate vision and translate it into sustained action while working with others. Examples include:

  • Student government leadership roles
  • President or executive roles in student organizations
  • Team captain positions
  • Completion of a leadership minor
  • Approved independent leadership initiatives

Support learning within the KU community. Examples include:

  • Peer mentor for BUS 110 or BUS 210
  • Teaching assistant in a KU School of Business course

Apply business concepts in real-world settings. Examples include:

Engage in learning experiences that build global perspective. Examples include:

Pursue independent or collaborative research. Examples include:

  • Faculty-led research projects
  • Independent research in business or related fields (economics, math, computer science)

Contribute to campus or community-based initiatives. Examples include:

Gain professional experience in a business setting. Must be a paid professional internship recognized by KU Business Career Services.
